New York: E.P. Duton, 1980. First Edition, First Printing. ISBN: 0525222359. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the author Edmund White on the half title page. First Edition. Very good in a very good dustwrapper with minimal shelfwear and a 1/2" tear near the head of the spine. Seen by some as a rather scandalous book for its time, the New York Times in 1980 called the book a "shapeless narrative that sometimes borders on pornography." However, the book was well received among the literary community as Fran Lebowitz wrote, “Edmund White is one of the few living writers who has the capacity to turn me into a good listener. States of Desire is consistently smart and funny.” Regardless, an important book which the Times Literary Supplement called the "first post–gay lib book of specifically gay travel writing. . . . Although the cities were diverse, Edmund White sought to identify what they had in common by way of a national gay community.” Very good in very good dust jacket. Hardcover
