London: Duckworth & Co., [n.d. but 1902]. First edition, green cloth issue. From birth, Ford was immersed in the Pre-Raphaelites, his grandfather Ford Madox Brown was a prominent painter in the Pre-Raphaelite circle and friends with Burne-Jones and Rossetti and his aunt was married to W.M. Rossetti. This was Ford’s second Pre-Raphaelite biography, the first being of his grandfather.
This copy is a fabulous association copy which is inscribed by Algernon Charles Swinburne to his sister, Isabel Swinburne. Swinburne was a notable poet associated with the Pre-Raphaelites, and a subject of a painting, housemate, and a close friend of Rossetti.
12mo. xv, , 192pp. [3, ads]. Harvey A10. Very good in publisher’s green gilt stamped cloth with spine somewhat rolled and sunned and front hinge starting, one contemporary annotation in ink. Item #225
