Item #223 The Hind and the Panther Transvers’d to the Story of The Country Mouse and the City-Mouse. Matthew Prior, Charles Montagu Halifax, Earl of.

The Hind and the Panther Transvers’d to the Story of The Country Mouse and the City-Mouse

London: Printed for W. Davis, 1687. First edition of the first separate published work by Matthew Prior. Both Montagu and Prior were the joint authors, but the contributions of each has been long debated. See MacDonald 241a; Legg, Matthew Prior. . ., pgs. 8-10 (1972 ed.). Published in the same year as Dryden’s Hind and Panther, Prior “wrote a burlesque reply.” The instant work pokes fun at Dryden’s use of animals in allegory to debate theological differences between the Church of England and Church of Rome.

4to. [6], 28pp., without initial blank leaf. ESTC R14177. Wing P3511. MacDonald, Drydeniania, 241a.
