Both Montagu and Prior were the joint authors, but the contributions of each has been long debated. See MacDonald 241a; Legg, Matthew Prior. . ., pgs. 8-10 (1972 ed.). Published in the same year as Dryden’s Hind and Panther, Prior “wrote a burlesque reply.” The instant work pokes fun at Dryden’s use of animals in allegory to debate theological differences between the Church of England and Church of Rome.
